When we talk about Qualcomm, most of the times the company has announced a new mid-range of high-end processor. These are the most exciting ones to be honest but that does not mean that the company does not focus on the budget segment. The latest chipset from Qualcomm for entry-level smartphones is the Snapdragon 215. This is the successor to the Snapdragon 212 and has a few upgrades including a 64-bit CPU, support for dual cameras and a faster GPU. This should make things interesting in the entry level segment, a category that has not seen some excitement of late.…

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a change on how manufacturers support their older devices. Companies are now supporting more devices with the latest updates unlike a few years ago when updates were mostly rolled out to their high-end devices. With mid and lower end devices, getting the latest Android update was a hit and miss game. You could either get it or not with no clear explanation at all. Samsung and Huawei were some of the top manufacturers notorious for this. They would just not support some of their device even the most recent ones that…
The Tecno Phantom 9 is set to go on sale in Kenya from next week, specifically on July 15. This will be the first Phantom smartphone to be launched in over a year and we told you one of its key selling points will be the three cameras at the back. July 15 is 7 days from now so we will not be waiting for long before the unveiling of this phone in the country. Tecno has had some good smartphones in the country this year with most of them selling well. I will be curious to see how the…
With the trade war between China and the US heating up, Huawei has been caught in the crossfire. The US government blacklisted Huawei and this meant that no American company was to do business with the Chinese company without approval by the government. Google is one such company and the search giant was forced to suspend ties with Huawei and this meant the future of Huawei smartphones was unknown. Google owns Android and we were just not sure what was going to happen after the ban. Huawei has been working on an Android alternative before this ban but we had…
About a week ago, the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 was officially unveiled in Kenya. The phone was available on pre-order through Jumia for Ksh 24,999 and its other partners. Within that week, the company reports that it has received over 1,000 pre-orders. This is quite a milestone to be achieved in a short time for a phone within this price. Speaking of the successful pre-order period, Huawei Mobile Country President, Steven Li said, “We would like to appreciate all our partners who ensured, we meet the target during the pre-order period. We are also glad that consumers are still confident…
Last Week, Huawei unveiled its latest mid-range smartphone, the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, in Kenya. This should not be confused with the Huawei Y9 2019 from last year. These are two different smartphones from the series with the latest one coming with updated specifications and hardware. I have been using the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 since it was launched and I thought I should share some of the things I like about this phone so far. This is not a full review and I will share that once I am done with it. The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is available…
During a stakeholder event yesterday, Microsoft highlighted its recently published Security Intelligence Report, which looks at emerging cybercrime trends over the past 12 months, revealing key findings not only into the global threat landscape but also locally. In 2018, cyberattacks cost the Kenyan economy Ksh.29.5B, this is according to the most recent annual report published by cybersecurity firm Serianu. The latter coupled with the recent attacks to…
It might be the end of the road for Android Beam with the release of Android Q later this year. Google has actually retired Android Beam and is now pushing users to use the Files app. Android Beam is an NFC-based sharing method that was introduced to us with the release of Android 4.0 but Google is ready to move to better things with Android Q. Even though the Files by Google app allows the sharing of apps between devices, Google is working on a better option that we should be seeing soon. This new feature will be called Fast…
For a few weeks, Huawei has been backed into a corner with the US government as it issued a directive preventing American companies from doing business with the Chinese company. This meant tat Huawei was not free to do business with companies such as Google and therefore could not get Android security updates directly from the search giant. The ban had kicked into effect but the grace period was extended by 90 days but we were just not sure what would happen after that. With this ban, future Huawei phones would not have Google apps including Gmail, YouTube etc pre-installed.…
Apple Music is one of the many music streaming services available for music lovers. The service now has 60 million users, both paying subscribers and those using the free option. Apple Music has reached this milestone in the past four years and this is not that bad. Apple Music is available on multiple platforms including Android and it does have some loyal fans on Google’s Mobile OS. In April last year, Apple reported that Apple Music had 40 million subscribers and this means that the platform has added 20 million users in just over a year. This is quite good…
