Starlink’s growing popularity has forced Safaricom to make some changes to its home fibre packages. The telco has introduced a 1 Gbps (Gigabit per second) package for Ksh 20,000 while at the same time revamping its existing package without changing the prices. The company says customers will be upgraded automatically to the enhanced packages.

Have a look at the changes below.

It took Safaricom long enough to roll out the Giga speed package in Kenya but at least it is finally here. The speed changes, especially for the Diamond package, is also a welcomed addition especially for heavy users. Safaricom says the higher speeds are meant for those seeking ultra high speeds including content creators, gamers, virtual reality applications just to name a few.

“We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to cater to the increased demand and usage by offering reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers. The introduction of the new speeds offers capability of handling the most demanding online activities with ease, including high-definition streaming 4K/8K, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality,” Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

Starlink typically offers internet speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 500 Mbps but not everyone gets the highest speeds. This I believe is the reason Safaricom has revamped its offering to try and prevent its customers from switching to Starlink which has been gaining popularity as the the cost of its kits has dropped significantly over the past few months. Keep in mind that Starlink costs Kes 6,500 per month which is cheaper than what Safaricom offers.

Safaricom Family Share plan

Safaricom has also introduced a family share plan, a solution combining  mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet into a single plan. This plan can be shared with up to 5 members of a household. “We have also introduced family share which offers a converged internet and mobile solution for home that can be shared with up to five loved ones. We are keen to deliver a great experience and value by innovating to meet and exceed customer needs,” said Peter Ndegwa.
