Sama Launches AI Training Platform to Strengthen Data Annotation and Drive Kenyan AI Innovation

Sama AI Training Platform

Sama AI Training Platform

Sama has announced the company-wide rollout of its innovative, scalable, productized training platform. This first-of-its-kind training solution is set to revolutionize AI development by significantly reducing project ramp times and enhancing data annotation accuracy, further cementing Sama’s position as an industry leader with a 99% client acceptance rate.

The new platform, which reduces project ramp times by up to 50%, improves annotators’ tag accuracy by 16% and shape accuracy by 15% on average. For Sama’s enterprise clients, this results in faster, higher-quality models going into production, saving both time and resources. The platform also offers Sama employees an enhanced training experience, equipping them with the skills needed for long-term success in the digital economy.

“Basic data annotation training encourages rote memorization, but at Sama, we focus on project-specific training to improve quality and reduce rework. Our new platform is designed to be more scalable and adaptable, allowing annotators to learn at their own pace and handle complex tasks such as automotive and Generative AI data annotation,” said Duncan Curtis, Senior Vice President of AI Product and Technology at Sama. “These sessions will help annotators not only excel on current AI projects, but also build and master new skills, which will prepare them for future AI innovations and development needs.”

Kenya is rapidly emerging as a center for AI innovation, and Sama is at the forefront of investing in local talent. The company’s new platform ties into its responsible AI framework, emphasizing the importance of data annotation as a stepping stone to building a skilled workforce. With a talent pipeline primarily made up of women and individuals from underrepresented communities, Sama is fostering diversity in AI development.

“We envision Kenya as a growing hub for new AI innovations and talent, able to reap the economic benefits of AI while ensuring that models are developed with diverse perspectives. For this vision to become reality, digital skilling is a must. This latest development is a clear signal of Sama’s deep commitment and investment in local talent,” said Maxwell Okello, CEO of America Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Kenya.

Sama’s new training platform introduces innovative features that allow annotators to master complex tasks such as LiDAR and sensor fusion data annotation more efficiently. The platform’s AutoQA™ system autonomously compares annotators’ work with verified answers, providing instant feedback for improvement. This helps trainees grasp key AI development principles and improve their annotation skills, positioning them for success in the evolving AI landscape.

The platform is designed to adapt to changing client needs, allowing Sama to update training instructions and quickly deploy re-training modules when project requirements shift. This flexibility ensures smooth transitions and minimizes rework, keeping projects on track and reducing costs.

As part of its broader suite of AI products, Sama employs a human-in-the-loop (HITL) approach to ensure that models are developed responsibly, with continuous feedback from expert annotators. This methodology ensures that AI models meet the highest standards of accuracy and ethical considerations, while Sama’s SamaAssure™ quality guarantee offers clients unparalleled confidence with a 98% first batch acceptance rate.
