Safaricom 5G

Safaricom was the first telco to launch 5G services in Kenya. Safaricom 5G went live in Kenya back in 2022 and the company has been aggressively expanding availability across the country.

Safaricom has today revealed that it has 1,114 5G sites in Kenya. These are spread across all 47 counties in 102 towns. The company says this covers 14% of the population. Back in March 2024, Safaricom reportedly had 803 5G sites and this means that it has added 311 new 5G sites in about 5 months. At that point, Airtel kenya had only 690 5G sites.

Safaricom also says it has over 11,000 enterprise customers on 5G and has seen the number of active 5G smartphones on its network grow to over 780,000.

‘Safaricom remains committed in leading Kenya’s Digital transformation through provision of a worry free, always on ubiquitous network enabling access to information, critical services and communication therefore bridging the digital divide. We believe that the benefits of 5G will be a key catalyst in leapfrogging other innovations, industries as well as Kenya’s digital economy,’ said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC
