Safaricom Adds 598 New 5G Sites in a Year

Safaricom has added 598 5G sites in Kenya in just one year. The company revealed this in its latest annual report. As of March 2024, the telco had 803 active 5G sites up from the 205 sites it had last year.

With 803 sites, Safaricom is the leading 5G operator in Kenya dwarfing Airtel’s 690 sites. Airtel Kenya launched its 5G services in Kenya last year while Safaricom 5G went live in Kenya back in October 2022.

“Since the activation of our 5G service in March 2021, and its subsequent launch in October 2022, we have greatly expanded network access, with 803 5G sites across 43 out of the 47 Kenyan counties, as at the end of March 2024,” said the report.

5G Sites in Kenya

With the new sites, Safaricom now has 5G coverage in 43 out of the 47 counties. This is up from the 23 counties it had coverage in last year. Airtel on the other hand has coverage in 39 counties, up from 16 last year.

Safaricom plans to expand the number of 5G sites to more than 1,700 by end of 2025.
