Showmax is gearing up to launch a standalone Premier League mobile streaming plan next month. Although specific details about the new plan remain undisclosed, the streaming service has confirmed the existence of three subscription options: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile, and Showmax Premier League Mobile.
The introduction of this new plan coincides with a makeover, including a fresh visual identity, a new application, and an entirely revamped product suite. This transformation follows the partnership between MultiChoice and Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky.
It’s worth noting that this plan might be exclusively accessible on mobile devices, meaning it won’t be available on the Showmax app for TVs or smart boxes. Either way, I am curious to see what it will have to offer and how much it will cost. Given the popularity of the English Premier League in Kenya and Africa in general, this is a long overdue product.
For several years, Showmax Pro has been the go-to subscription plan for those seeking live sports access. While it offers coverage for some games, it doesn’t show all games. With an exclusive Premier league subscription plan, I expect a better product catered specifically to football fans.
21 Showmax originals
In addition to the Premier League plan, Showmax will also unveil 21 new Showmax Originals next month, totaling 1,300 hours of content, to be distributed across Africa. Among these releases are Season 3 of Single Kiasi, along with adaptations of two South African bestsellers: Angela Makholwa’s serial killer thriller, “Red Ink,” and “Catch Me A Killer,” the memoir of Micki Pistorius, South Africa’s first serial killer profiler.
Besides the Showmax Originals, viewers can look forward to international highlights such as Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The new international content, including Halo, will be in HD with Dolby 5.1 surround sound, a perk resulting from Showmax’s migration onto the global Peacock streaming platform.
CEO Marc Jury commented on what lies ahead in 2024, stating, “It’s a big year for Showmax. We will be kicking it off with a content slate packed with world-class entertainment from the world’s biggest brands, more African Originals than ever before, and the first-ever mobile Premier League plan for Africa.”
