Huawei Supports Meru University of Science and Technology’s new TVET workshop

Huawei Kenya has supported the setup of the Luban Workshop, jointly built by Tianjin City Vocational College and Meru University of Science and Technology in a bid to collaborate in developing programs that can produce professional talent to meet industry’ needs. They will also promote cultural exchanges and research.

The project was initiated in the spirit of equal cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit. The partner institutions will leverage their respective strengths, strengthen skills, integrate production and education, and enhance cooperation between schools and also between schools and enterprises.

Adam Lane, Director of Government Relations at Huawei Kenya said that the new facility’s focus areas will include ICT training, an enterprise sand box and technical skill exchange programs.

“The two institutions will cooperate to develop and operationalize a four-year undergraduate course in e-commerce and computer science. Tianjin City Vocational College will provide Meru University of Science and Technology with professional technical courses and curriculum standards, related digital teaching resources, and an online teaching and training platform, said Lane.

In addition, Meru University of Science and Technology will send lecturers to Tianjin City Vocational College for professional training, do the teaching and training of the courses in Kenya, and provide support and assistance for expanding the influence of Luban Workshop.

In attendance was Zhang Yijun, Minister-Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Ms. Geng Jie, Director of Tianjin Academy of Educational Sciences, Mr. Lu Jiahua, Deputy Director of Hebei District Education Bureau of Tianjin and Fredrick Ndambuki, Secretary Administration, State Department of Higher Education and Research in the Ministry of Education.

The Luban Workshop was the first international cooperation project of Tianjin Department of Vocational Education when it began in 2016, and has since supported the training and development of students. It has facilitated a platform for international co-operation which enhances education quality and global production.

Through the joint participation of teachers and students in academic exchanges, research, and skill competitions, the partners will strengthen capacity-building cooperation in technology transfer, education and training. This aimed at training youth in technical skills, transforming Kenya’s population into a rich pool of human resources and helping the country’s economic and social development.
