In an effort to improve healthcare services and address healthcare challenges across Kenya, the M-PESA Foundation has announced a significant investment of KES 46 million. This investment will benefit approximately 60,000 Kenyans through a series of medical camps conducted in all 47 counties. The medical camps aim to provide essential healthcare information, medical equipment and drugs, as well as screenings for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), dental care, eye care, and management of diabetes and hypertension.
The M-PESA Foundation has a strong commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for local communities. This recent investment in medical camps further complements their ongoing initiatives in collaboration with various counties. By reaching as many people as possible, the foundation aims to ensure better access to quality healthcare services throughout the country.
Launching the Medical Camps in Lamu County
The first medical camp will be launched in Lamu County, with an initial investment of KES 1,700,000.00 by the M-PESA Foundation. This funding will be allocated towards the provision of drugs and surgical equipment to support healthcare services in the area. This launch marks the beginning of a broader effort to extend these camps to all 47 counties in Kenya.
The M-PESA Foundation has been actively involved in several flagship health projects that aim to provide specialized care and address specific healthcare needs across the country. Here are a few notable initiatives:
Daktari Smart: In collaboration with Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, the M-PESA Foundation launched Daktari Smart, a telemedicine project. It provides specialist care to individuals in hard-to-reach and underserved areas of Lamu, Homa Bay, Baringo, and Samburu counties. With an investment of KES 168 million, this program has been operational since 2021 and has already provided access to specialist health services for more than 32,000 children.
Uzazi Salama: The M-PESA Foundation’s reproductive health program, Uzazi Salama, aims to benefit over 90,000 individuals in Homa Bay County. This initiative focuses on providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare services to improve maternal and child health outcomes in the region.
Fistula Program: In collaboration with Flying Doctors, the M-PESA Foundation runs a fistula program. Since 2021, over 400 women have received surgery and treatment through this program. It aims to address the issue of obstetric fistula, a condition affecting many women in Kenya.
In addition to the medical camps, the Safaricom Foundation has recently launched the renovated Kiwayu Dispensary in Lamu County. This initiative, costing KES 2 million, further enhances access to quality healthcare services for the local community.
