Huawei Technologies has launched a new cyber security service in Kenya, aimed at addressing the increasing cyber security risks associated with emerging technologies such as cloud storage solutions and artificial intelligence systems. The service, known as Ransomware Protection 2.0, is designed to help both private and public sector organizations in Kenya protect their systems against cyber attacks, particularly ransomware attacks which have increased dramatically in recent years.
Huawei Kenya CEO Gao Fei highlighted the importance of maintaining a secure ICT environment to benefit from the expansionary economic impact of ICT. The rapid growth of the ICT sector has brought explosive growth in data storage requirements as more services depend on data for critical applications. Consequently, it has become challenging to handle large amounts of data efficiently, ensure OnDemand mobility of data, turn data into gold, and at the same time protect data. Huawei’s Ransomware Protection 2.0 is aimed at addressing these challenges and helping organizations protect their valuable data.
Andrew Opiyo, Director ICT at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy, noted that with the acceleration of digital transformation and rapid data growth in Kenya, the country faces a significant threat from ransomware attacks, which have increased dramatically in recent years. He emphasized the need for robust cyber security protection, particularly as the government rolls out 25,000 Wi-Fi hotspots and digitizes government services.
Kenya is one of the most targeted countries in Africa, with 32.8 million ransomware attacks recorded in the first half of 2021 alone, according to a recent report by Kaspersky. Huawei’s Ransomware Protection 2.0 offers a solution to prevent such attacks from happening, and the service is expected to be welcomed by both public and private sector organizations in Kenya.
