JUMO, a technology company specializing in financial services for emerging market entrepreneurs, recently appointed Joe Mucheru as President of the company. Mucheru, who was formerly the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to JUMO’s executive team and board.
Mucheru has a strong background in technology, having previously served as the head of Sub-Saharan Africa for Google and co-founding Wananchi Online, the parent company of Zuku, an internet service provider. He is also a global board member of UNICEF Generation Unlimited and holds various other board positions, including at M-Pesa Foundation Academy, Bitpesa (now Aza Group), and GiveDirectly.
At JUMO, Mucheru will be responsible for supporting the company’s growth goals, navigating the regulatory landscape, and expanding JUMO’s presence across Africa. JUMO’s platform has been used to make 130 million loans, totaling $4 billion, to over 20 million people and small businesses in six African countries.
JUMO Founder and CEO, Andrew Watkins-Ball, expressed his excitement to welcome Mucheru to the company, citing his experience as an entrepreneur, Google executive, and regulator. Mucheru also expressed his enthusiasm for joining JUMO and its mission to revolutionize the lending space in Africa by connecting entrepreneurs and individuals to the financial products they need to grow and prosper.
In 2022, JUMO also appointed Nichola Pease as Non-Executive Chair and Michael Ball, former CFO of World Remit, as Chief Financial Officer. With the addition of Mucheru as President, JUMO continues to strengthen its leadership and position itself as a leader in the financial technology industry.
