How to apply for the new digital number plates in Kenya

Earlier this week, the government introduced the new digital number plates that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also have a number of security features embedded underneath.

The new digital plates are rolled out in compliance with the Traffic Act, 2016.

The government has given motorists 18 months to apply for the new number plates or face a fine of ksh 20,000 or jail term of 6 months.

If you want to apply for these digital plates, here are the steps to follow.

Apply for the new digital number plates online via TIMS

Set up SMS alerts by sending NTSA to 22847. NTSA Will use this to alert you when your number plate is ready for collection.

  • Go to www.ntsa.go.ke and click on the TIMS logo.
  • Go to apply reflective number plate.
  • Select your type of vehicle.
  • Choose the type of number plate.
  • Indicate the person to pick them and location to be picked at.
  • Pay the application fee (ksh 3,000) for ordinary plates, ksh 30,000 for preferred plates and ksh 1,500 for motorcycle plates.

That’s it, you will be alerted when they are ready to be picked up.

Manual application

You can also apply for the new digital number plates manually through :

  • Getting the application form from NTSA.
  • Fill in the vehicle information and the type of plates needed.
  • Return the form to NTSA offices.
  • Pay the application fee (ksh 3,000) and wait to be informed when they are ready.

What’s new with the digital number plates

These new number plates feature inbuilt security aspects that the government says will make it easier to trace ownership of cars by law enforcement agencies.

These new plates have anti-counterfeit features, including holograms, watermarks, and laser markers to make it easier for the police to trace information on particular vehicles and their owners.
