Samsung in 2019 announced a partnership with AMD that would see the graphics company build a GPU for Exynos smartphone processors. Well, 2 years and a pandemic later, Samsung has today announced its new flagship mobile chipset, the Exynos 2200; an Exynos 2100 SoC successor which will be the first product in the partnership.
Despite being rumored to be canceled earlier on owing to ‘issues’ like the global chip shortage, Samsung confirmed that Exynos 2200 is actually already here with us ahead of the S22 Series launch.
The Exynos 2200 chip is built on a 4nm design as well as the new Armv9 CPU cores, and is combined with cutting-edge mobile, GPU, and NPU technology. The new Samsung chip comes with an AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based Samsung Xclipse GPU, which offers several new features like Ray Tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS), basically, the same technology we have seen on current-generation PCs, laptops and gaming consoles. The graphics on phone won’t be the same as the one we see on consoles as the GPU comes with a reduced number of cores and even clock speed.
The processor will enhance the overall experience in social media apps and photography as well as enable the ultimate mobile phone gaming experience.
For a smooth and effortless 5G connectivity, Exynos 2200 comes with a fast 3GPP Release 16 5G modem supporting both sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. You can therefore expect downloadlink speeds of up to 5.1Gbps via sub-6GHZ and 7.35Gbps via mmWave. When using the EN-DC mode which combines both 4G and 5G, then you can hit downlink speeds of up to 10Gbps.
Exynos 2200 also supports a 200MP single camera sensor, a 108MP single camera at 30fps, 64MP+36MP dual cameras at 30fps, and also supports 8K video recording at 30fps. The chip, lastly, supports HDR10+ displays and a 2K screen with a 144Hz refresh rate or one with a 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.
This chipset is in mass production and is expected in some Galaxy S22 Series phones. With new Samsung flagships expected to be launched in February, we can’t wait to have a hands-on experience with this new processor.
