Standard Chartered Bank has been feted at the CIO Africa 100 Awards with the bank emerging winner in the Banking Sector Award category. The bank was recognized for its exemplary performance in the sector with a highlight on its digital innovation and leadership which included creating competitive advantage in the organization, improving business processes, enabling growth and improving relationships with customers.
This year marked the 13th edition of the awards which celebrate companies and individuals for being the best in the field of technology in Africa. The annual event, which attracts the tech industry thought leaders and influencers received over 450 applications for a cross-section of individual and organizational awards. The Banking Sector Award had more than 20 applicants.

At least 160 companies had been shortlisted for the Africa CIO100 Awards in the first phase. The list was subjected to screening in the second phase to arrive at the top 100 companies. The technical team had analyzed Survey data gathered over the past three months. 536 companies from across Africa submitted applications with the majority, 60% coming from Kenya (35%), with noteworthy numbers from Nigeria (15%), Uganda (7%), and Rwanda (3%).
The organizations are assessed on their ability to not only deliver results but also to build on sustainably by creating a culture of continuous improvement.
Other awards that the bank has won include:
- The best tier 1 bank for digital experience and the best bank overall in the Kenya Bankers Association customer satisfaction survey.
- Globally, Standard Chartered was recognized at the 2020 Global Finance Awards as the Best Digital Consumer Bank.
- Outstanding Customer Experience for Financial Inclusion award from The Digital Banker.
- Most Recommended Retail Bank in Kenya and Africa from the Bank Quality Consumer Survey on Retail Banks in 2020 by The Asian Banker.
- Best deal in finance transaction for pandemic relief in Africa and Tanzania Light railway Project by the GTR Awards
