Top 5 Things to Know About the Nokia G20

Nokia G20 display

The Nokia G20 is one of the latest smartphones from HMD Global to launch in Kenya. The phone is available in Kenya for Ksh 15,000. This is quite a reasonable price and makes the G20 one of the competitively priced smartphones that you can get in Kenya at the moment.

I have already done an unboxing post for the Nokia G20 that you can check out below.

If you are still unsure what the Nokia G20 has to offer, this post will highlight some of the top 5 things that can help you decide if this phone is worth your money.

5,000 mAh Battery

The one thing I love and appreciate about the Nokia G20 is its 5,000 mAh battery. With this battery, you can easily use the phone for 2 to 3 days on a single charge. This is not a power-hungry smartphone so the battery will not drain that fast. This is what you expect from an entry level phone and it is exactly what you get.

The only issue I have with this battery is that it does not support fast charging. Given the size of the battery, it takes quite a while to fully charge it when it is running low. In 2021, some sort of fast charging is expected especially when you consider the price of the phone. Some of the phones it is competing with support fast charging and I don’t get why the G20 does not.

48MP Main Sensor

The Nokia G20 comes with a 48MP main sensor at the back that is part of a quad camera setup. As for the other sensors, we do have 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP portrait lens. The shots you get with the back camera are quite good, better than what I was expecting. The camera app itself can be a bit slow at times but the shots you get are really good.

For selfies, the G20 has an 8MP front facing camera that also takes some good shots.

Android 11 – Android One

Like all the other Nokia smartphones, the Nokia G20 is an Android One smartphone that comes with no bloatware and unwanted software. You only get some of the key apps from Google and that is it. If you need any additional apps, you can download them from the Play Store.

With no bloatware, you can use the 64GB of storage space to store your photos, music or anything you like. This space is decent for most people and is standard in 2021.

The Nokia G20 comes with Android 11 out of the box and is scheduled to get at least 2 major Android OS updates when they become available. This means that the phone should get Android 12 and 13.

Helio G35 Processor

Powering the Nokia G20 is the MediaTek Helio G35 processor. This is good but not necessarily the best processor compared to what competitors have to offer. The processor is also not powerful enough for a smartphone that costs about Ksh 15,000. Performance is not something to brag about with the G20 as it feels quite slow even when running day to day tasks.

HMD Global should consider using a much more powerful processor with the next iteration of this phone if it is to compete with some of the other smartphones within its price range.

4GB RAM

Still on performance, the Nokia G20 has 4GB of RAM that is good. This helps with slightly better multitasking and the phone handles that quite well. Switching between apps and reopening apps is a breeze. This is what you expect from a smartphone within this price range as no one wants to buy a phone they can’t use to do what they want.
