Spotify Is Increasing Subscription Prices for Some of Its Plans

Spotify is increasing prices for most of its plans in certain regions. So far, subscribers in the US, UK, and some parts of Europe will have to pay additional fees to continue streaming music on the platform ad-free.

Price changes will affect several plans, including Student, Duo, and Family plans. In all the mentioned regions, the price of the standard Individual plan will remain as is.

In the US, Spotify family will cost $15.99 per month from $14.99. In the UK, prices have also been increased by a euro, except for the family plan, slapped with a 2 euro increase.

For some parts of Europe, prices have increased similarly although the family plan is up by three euros.

Price changes will also expand to certain countries in Asia and South America. Africa is safe, for now, but it will not be surprising to see such in the foreseeable future.

Netflix followed a similar strategy; first increasing prices in the US, then gradually expanded to Europe and Africa. Netflix Kenya subscribers will start to pay up to KES 250 more starting as early as next month, in line with the recent price hike.

Responding about the price hikes, a Spotify spokesperson told the Verge;

“We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users’ needs, and we occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service.”

In Kenya, the cheapest Student plan goes for KES 149 per month. The individual plan currently costs KES 299 per month while Duo and Family plans cost KES 389 and KES 479 respectively.

So far Spotify undercuts the subscription price of rivals like Apple Music and Deezer, but just a one-dollar increase will make its offers less competitive.
