Explaining the reason behind the shutdown, Yahoo Answers sent an email to active members, citing a decline in usage over the years.

“While Yahoo Answers war once a key part of Yahoo’s products and services, it has become less popular over the years as the needs of our members have changed,” the email read.

Most notably, new Q&A platforms like Reddit and Quora have emerged since Yahoo Answers launched in 2005, giving the platform stiff competition.

“We have decided to shift our resources away from Yahoo Answers to focus on products that better serve our members and deliver on Yahoo’s promise of providing premium trusted content.”

Starting April 20, Yahoo Answers will no longer accept new submissions. Users will, however, continue to view content on the platform even after that. The final blow will be landed on May 4, when the website will be directed to Yahoo’s main homepage.

Yahoo is giving users a chance to request and download their data before June 30, 2021. According to a support page, these requests can take up to 30 days to finish processing and the download to become available.

After June 30, Yahoo Answers will data will be securely deleted and no longer available.

Yahoo Answers’ shutdown will, however, not affect other products from Yahoo, the company said.
