Since the notch display design trend started, many companies have had their takes to provide more screen real estate with less interruption.
The notch came in handy on the road to offer more display space at first, but smartphone makers have transitioned from that to the now ubiquitous hole punch. And most recently, the race is to offer under-display selfie cameras, which seems like the ultimate answer to this quest.
Apple is the only major company still making devices with a 2017-esque notch design.
But the company is now looking to make a change. A report from the reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the company plans to replace the notch with a hole punch. The replacement is expected to begin with the iPhone 14, or whichever name Apple decides to call the 2022 iPhone family.
The “punch-hole display design” presumably resembles what we’ve seen with Samsung’s Galaxy flagship series.
A punch hole will be a first for Apple, as the company had not yet replaced the notch since its first debuted with the iPhone X in 2017.
iPhone SE 5G
Kuo also shared details about the first-ever budget 5G-capable iPhone. He says the company plans to launch the iPhone SE 5G come the first half of 2022. The budget SE 5G will be the company’s cheapest 5G-capable iPhone.
Apple released its first line of 5G iPhones in 2020, the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. With major differences lying in the camera systems.
Kuo says the company might retain the smaller display in the upcoming iPhone SE 5G, as we saw in the second-generation iPhone SE launched in 2020. If that’s the case, it will feature a 4.7-inch display. The unique selling points of the iPhone SE 5G will be 5G and the upgraded processor.
