Apple has announced a change in its hardware engineering team. Apple’s Hardware Engineering organization’s longtime running head, Dan Riccio, has been moved to a new role and will be working on a new project.
Riccio has spearheaded designing, developing, and engineering of “almost all of Apple’s products” since the 1st gen iMac, to more recent devices like M1-based Macs, 5G iPhones and AirPods Max.
“Every innovation Dan has helped Apple bring to life has made us a better and more innovative company, and we’re thrilled that he’ll continue to be part of the team,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a blog post.
Dan will be replaced by John Ternus, who joined the company in 2001, around three years after Riccio as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.
There are no specific details of the new project Dan Riccio will be working on, after spending most of the past decade leading the hardware engineering team. Riccio says he will be working on what he loves the most and will be focusing all his time and energy at the company to “creating something new and wonderful.”
Riccio joined Apple in 1998 as a Product Design team lead and was later appointed as vice president of iPad Hardware Engineering in 2010. Two years later, he was promoted to the elite team working as the leader of Hardware Engineering.
Apple has been working on a variety of new projects lately. One of them is self-driving car technology. Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a passenger vehicle that will leverage this technology by 2024, Reuters reported in December.
