The Google Play Store is flooded with millions of applications. You’ll find many different applications which do nearly the same thing from different developers. As such, it can be hard to select which app to go for unless you comb through online reviews.
To avoid all of that heavy lifting, Google is testing a new feature in the Play Store that compares similar apps against each other.
The feature compares similar apps using different criteria such as ease of use, Play Store ratings, downloads, etc. The criteria will certainly vary because different apps with different functionalities have totally different core features to look out for.
According to a tip shared online, the new “Compare apps” section will be shown where the Similar apps section currently lives.
A GIF posted on Android Police shows the feature comparing VLC against other similar apps on ratings, downloads, offline access, visual quality and controls.
This will certainly make life easier for everyone while scouting for an app to download.
The new feature is available for a few running version 22.4.28 of the Google Play Store. The publication also notes that the comparison feature is not yet available widely – you will see it on select apps.
These limitations mean the feature is still under development. That means they’re no rollout timeline, and there is no guarantee Google will even add the feature in the future. Let’s hope they do!
