MultiChoice Group, the company behind DStv, has announced its latest decoder, DStv Explora Ultra. The DStv Explora Ultra is a first for the company with added streaming support, letting you binge-watch content from third-party providers.

“Our DStv Explora Ultra brings the best of two worlds together by introducing streaming apps, adding depth to the entertainment offering available,” says MultiChoice.

With streaming capabilities, DStv Explora Ultra includes built-in WiFi support. Streaming resolution maxes out at 4K, and the icing on the cake is Dolby Atmos’ support for compatible devices. Although 4K support is included, 4K content isn’t available(yet) on the platform – even via the company’s streaming platform, ShowMax.

For now, MultiChoice has not specified which third-party streaming providers are supported. Previously, there have been talks about MultiChoice considering to add Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video support on its next-gen decoder. High chances are, DStv Explora Ultra is it.

All customers with an ongoing DStv subscription will be able to access all the third-party streaming apps. The vice versa is right – no active subscription, no access to supported streaming services. But keep in mind that you will have to purchase subscriptions from respective third-party providers and individually not via DStv.

As a plus, the decoder will ship with a new remote control as well.

During the launch of the new Explora personal video recorder (PVR) decoder, the company also unveiled another device. MultiChoice’s first streaming-only set-top box – DStv Streama – was launched with 4K support.

Although MultiChoice mandates owners of DStv Streama to use a DStv account to login, an active subscription is not required. DStv Streama looks different.
