One of the things I have always loved about Huawei’s EMUI are its battery saving features. I have been using EMUI on and off for years and this is one of the features that make it stand out compared to some of the other custom user interfaces and stock Android. You can use the different battery saving features to extend your phone’s battery life by a few hours or up to a day..

These battery saving features are available on EMUI which is available on all Huawei phones. It does not matter the version of EMUI you have as I have been using them for years so you should get them even on a 4-year-old Huawei phone.

I have used these settings on the new Huawei Y8p that EMUI 10.1 running Android 10. This phone is available locally through Jumia for about Ksh 23,000.

Accessing EMUI Battery Saving Options

To access Huawei’s EMUI battery saving features, you:

Performance Mode

With this mode, your phone’s performance will be optimized to the maximum setting. This might also cause the battery to drain faster and in some cases your phone may heat up. This is the setting to use when gaming and want ultimate performance or if you are doing something on your phone that requires maximum power.

This setting will lower your smartphones battery life by up to 30 minutes or more compared to the default battery setting.

Power Saving Mode

This feature limits the background app activity of your phone. One way it does this is by disabling email auto-sync and system sounds as well as reducing visual effects. On this setting, you will be able to use your phone as you normally do, receiving notifications and having access to all apps.

This setting is perfect if you want to still have access to your phone but want the battery to last long. Compared to the default battery setting, it can give you up to 1 hour more of usage and more than 1 hour of usage compared to the performance mode.

Ultra-Power Saving Mode

This is the setting to activate if you are really running low on battery. On this setting, only certain apps that you choose will be available to use.

This setting can give you up to an extra workday of battery life as it kills of apps and gives you access to only a few of them.

Optimize Battery Usage

Besides the three battery modes, you can also optimize battery usage through the settings menu and let the phone decide on the measures to take to extend battery life. Some of these measures will include turning off mobile date, turning off GPS among other settings.

If you do not want the phone to handle that for you, you can go to the battery consumption details (still under the settings menu) and find the apps that have been eating up your batter and if needed, stop them from running in the background.
