Fast charging is one of the new standard features in the smartphone industry. In the recent past, companies have taken bold steps to increase the rate of charging our smartphones dramatically.
Currently, OPPO holds the mantle with the fastest charging brick on the market at 65W. But that’s still not enough, according to the company. OPPO is almost doubling that with an upcoming 125W charging brick… 125W!
That’s faster than Xiaomi’s 100W fast-charging tech teased last year. For context, Xiaomi said the 100W fast-charging brick takes a battery from 0-100% in 17 mins.
Recently, iQOO, Vivo’s spinoff brand, has something of the sort in the works, too. iQOO recently demoed its 120W FlashCharge fast charging solution that is based on Vivo’s Super FlashCharge. Using this brick, a 4000mAh battery goes from 0-100% in just 15mins, a bit slower than what Vivo pitched about its 120W SuperFlash charger last year: it promised 0-100% in 13 minutes.
So, OPPO’s 125W fast charging tech will, obviously, take this a notch higher.
A push for more charging speeds has been hindered by technical difficulties succumbing the technology. In the past, Xiaomi has admitted that shortcomings of fast charging technology have made it difficult for them to launch the much-anticipated 100W charger teased last year. According to Xiaomi’s VP, Lu Weibing, battery degradation has been a problem.
“According to preliminary estimates, the capacity of a 100W fast charge battery is about 20% less than that of a 30W PD fast charge. In short, 5,000mAh becomes 4,000mAh,” wrote Lu in a Weibo post, as transalted by Google Transalate.
In that line, let’s wait and see what OPPO has done to achieve such speeds and when we should expect to see their smartphones juiced at that pace. The company will provide more details on the same this coming Wednesday, on July 15.
Update, July 15: Officially Released
OPPO has officially announced their 125W fast-charging technology. It only takes 20 minutes to charge a 4000mAh.
At the launch, the company also released its new breakthrough in fast charging technology: 65W AirVOOC wireless charging technology. The company also announced a 50W Mini SuperVOOC charger and a 110W Mini Flash Charger.
