Microsoft’s Office apps have operated separately on Android since the beginning. You had to install the three separate apps on your device to get the cross-functionality needed for opening and editing any document – which wasn’t user-friendly at all.
The good news is Microsoft has finally released a new single handy app that combines the three. The unified app is now available on Google Play, after several months of testing via a closed beta channel.
On top of just reading and editing documents, the app also lets you capture notes, convert images to text via scanning (including spreadsheets), Sign PDFs using your finger, and scan QR codes to open links. Furthermore, you can also transfer files from your phone to nearby devices directly from the app.
Check out the video below.
The app is only available on phones running Android 7 and above(no iOS app available yet). Despite launching the new unified app, Microsoft still has the separate apps listed on the Play Store. At this point, it is not yet clear what the company’s final stand will be on the standalone Excel, Word, and PowerPoint apps – whether they will be replaced in the future or run parallel. Nonetheless, the former seems likely in the long run.
