Google Maps Icon Revamped, Introduces More Features as it Turns 15

Google maps new icon

Google Maps officially turns 15 today, and in that line, Google has overhauled the app right from outside on the icon. The company has introduced a new app icon today, which now reflects more of its branding. The app icon is now a standalone pin colored in a way that reflects Google’s branding.

Additionally, Google Maps has also received new changes internally with two new tabs – “contribute” and “updates” – added on the bottom on top of the usual three – Explore,” “Commute,” and “For You.” However, the tab named “For You” has now been renamed to “saved” which makes it sound more user-curated.

The redesign cuts on the number of clicks you had to go through to access recently updated features, introduced in Maps towards the end of last year.  The new redesign starts rolling out today on both Android and iOS apps.

Upcoming Features in Maps

Aside from the redesign, Google Maps promises to bring more features in the near future. One of the new features coming in Live View that will work in tow with augmented reality to help you navigate effortlessly by superimposing directions over real-world objects when you turn your phone up.

Another new feature is the ability to provide more information about public transit. This will be more to the detail, unlike the current version which can only inform you when the train or bus will be crowded.

These new features will be available from March.
