Google’s in-house incubator, Area 120, has released a short video app dubbed Tangi. The new app still takes on the seemingly widespread interest in short video apps but with a different approach.
Unlike the likes of TikTok and Likee, which have by nature turned out as entertainment platforms, Tangi is here to help people learn some craft. It majorly helps creatives make short-form DIY videos on variable topics ranging from cooking, fashion, and beauty, etc.
“We only focus on DIY and creativity content. Our platform’s goal is to help people learn to craft, cook and create with quick one-minute videos,” said Coco Mao Tangi founder in a blog post.
“We designed Tangi to make it easier for users to find a lot of high-quality how-to videos,” she added.
Like TikTok, Tangi also allows up to 1-minute short-form videos — although most videos barely hit the 50-second mark as per now. The UI looks pretty familiar, with categories placed on the top that you can swipe to view more and menus located on the bottom. There is a profile section, a notifications page, and a home button that is sort-of a feed. It is a kind of Pinterest-ish.
As per now, Tangi is only available on the web and iOS. The platform isn’t open to all, however. Creative types still have to apply to join the community, a rule that aims to ensure the platform remains a creativity and DIY space. Although the platform is still under a closed beta phase.
For viewers, the platform is open so you can join as early as now and enjoy learning. The app is available globally except in the EU, and users enjoy an ad-free experience.
