Last month WhatsApp officially ditched support for Windows-powered smartphones. But it’s about time the same applies for old Android phones and iPhones.
The company announced that the end of support is mainly because old devices won’t be able to accommodate the new features planned to be availed on the platform in the future.
WhatsApp will end support for any Android running Android 2.3.7 (and earlier versions) and iPhones with iOS 8 and below as of January 31st. Starting February 1st, the popular instant messaging platform will no longer work on these devices.
WhatsApp already bared users with Android versions 2.3.7 and older from being able to create new accounts and reverify existing ones last December. The same applied to iOS 8 devices, but now the final plug is here.
If you still use any of these affected devices, you are advised to purchase a new phone as most of these devices won’t be updated to the latest software version due to hardware containments.
However, for iPhone users, you can still check for updates on the iPhone as the company tends to update its devices for a more extended period.
WhatsApp says it now supports the following devices;
- Android running OS 4.0.3+
- iPhone running iOS 9+
- Select phones running KaiOS 2.5.1+, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2
