Yesterday, Android 10 was finally released to the world. As it was revealed recently, Google was ditching the dessert names and that is why the latest version of its mobile OS is going by Android 10.
With the formal release of Android 10, you should expect it to start rolling out to some devices anytime from today. Well, that is true but do not hold your breath as the roll out is currently available for select devices and most people will not get it this year. Since most manufacturers tend to be slow when it comes to pushing out the latest updates, most people will be getting this update from mid 2020, some will wait longer and some will not get it.
That aside, those who own the Google Pixel phones are guaranteed to be among the first ones to get Android 10. This has been the case in previous years and will be so this year. The update is already available to the Pixel phones and people are free to download it manually or over the air.
Besides the Pixel phones, Android 10 is also available for the Essential phone, OnePlus and Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro.
For the Essential phone, it is impressive to see it get the update as this is not a new phone as it has been on the market for over 3 years. If only other manufacturers were on the same level as Essential phone, we would be having a different conversation in regards to Android fragmentation.
One other device that will be among the first ones to get Android 10 is the recently unveiled Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro. This phone was part of the company’s beta testing program and was meant to get the update before others. Android 10 for this device is raising some questions as those in China are getting the final build but those in some other countries are getting a beta copy that requires a Xiaomi account.
For OnePlus, the story is pretty much the same as those who own the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro are getting the beta version. According to OnePlus, this Open Beta Testing program is open to anyone who owns the mentioned devices. The company has not announced when the stable version will roll out but I will update you on that when I have that information.
HMD Global plans to update its devices soon but hasn’t said a thing since the official release of Android 10. Some of the other key manufacturers including Samsung and Huawei have been silent on this. Huawei may have bigger problems at this point so we don’t expect a lot of announcements from them until they have a clear roadmap of their future.
On to what you are getting with Android 10, it comes with the much anticipated Dark Theme, improved user privacy and security, gesture navigation, Smart Reply in notifications and much more.
