Taking the phone out of the box for the first time, you get to feel what this phone promises. I got the Aurora blue version which looks stunning to say the least. This is my favourite colour so far but those who don’t like it that much can go for the Coral red or midnight black versions. The Coral Red version will be a perfect Valentine’s gift.
The Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 has a 6.26-inch display but does not feel that big. If you used the Y7 Prime 2018, this size will be perfect for you. I have no problems using this phone with one hand and this is not the biggest smartphone display I have used. With a bigger display, I find the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 perfect for media consumption.
Still on the display, the one thing you will notice is the notch style that the company is calling ‘Dewdrop’. This is why you will see the company use the term ‘Dewdrop display’ when marketing the Y7 Prime 2019. This is different from the notch style we saw on the Y7 Prime 2018. Since smartphone notches are here to stay, I would rather deal with this style over the other one that seems to be used on all other smartphones. The notch houses the 16MP selfie camera which promises great selfies.
The display on the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 has a HD+ resolution and I have no complains so far. It is very responsive and is bright enough for me. The size is also right for those who watch a lot of videos or movies on their phones.
The Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 comes with a micro USB port at the bottom sandwiched between two speaker grilles but only one of them has functional speakers. On the left
Flipping the phone, I got to see how good the Aurora blue version looks. On the back is also where you get the fingerprint sensor and the dual AI cameras of 13MP and 2MP. The fingerprint sensor is quite fast and is very accurate. Setting it up is quick and straightforward with no hurdles whatsoever.
Switching on the phone, you get to see what EMUI 8.2, which the phone comes with, has to offer. EMUI 8.2 is based on Android 8.1 Oreo which is not the latest version of Android available. I am a bit disappointed with this as I was expecting it to come with Android Pie out of the box. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with Android Pie pre-installed and I was expecting the same from this. My hope right now is the company roll out the update very soon.
My experience with EMUI so far has been good. I have used EMUI before so I feel right at home. I managed to set up Face Unlock with no issues at all. Still on Face unlock, it is fast and you can use it to unlock the phone without looking at the phone directly. These are tiny options that users of Face unlock may appreciate.
All the three cameras on the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 are impressive. The selfie camera takes detailed shots and comes with beauty mode for those who prefer using that feature. The two cameras at the back are also really good. These are AI cameras that can adjust the setting after they detect your environment (or scene) to ensure you get good photos at all times.
Powering the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is the Snapdragon 450 processor that has been paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space. If this space is not enough for you, you can expand it up to 512GB using a microSD card.
Lastly, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 comes with a massive 4,000 mAh battery. I am a heavy user and I got this to last an entire day. For average users, you should expect at least two days or even more. Besides the battery size, Huawei has included a few battery saving options that you can take advantage of to get your battery to last even longer.
I will be using this phone for the next couple of weeks so come back for the full review and a few posts that I will have done.
