Clarification: I had earlier stated that Huawei launched the Y5 Lite 2018, that was not entirely true as the phone launched was the Y5 Lite.
Earlier today, Huawei unveiled the Y5 Lite in Kenya. This is currently one of the cheapest smartphones from Huawei and is available for Ksh 9,990. The Y5 Lite joins the Huawei Y5 Prime 2018, Y7 Prime 2018 and the Y9 2019 that the company brought into the country earlier this year. Before the Y5 Lite 2018, the Y9 2019 is the company’s most recent device that is available in retail stores for Ksh 23,990.
With the Huawei Y5 Lite, the company is targeting a vital market in Kenya that has been dominated by Infinix, Tecno, Itel and a few other brands. This is one of the key segments in Kenya and that is why it makes sense for Huawei to target it. The Chinese manufacturers had a huge presence in the segment a few years back but hasn’t been a major player for some time now. With the launch of the Y5 Lite, things may just change.
The Huawei Y5 Lite is an Android Go smartphone and joins the ever growing list of Go devices that we have seen in Kenya this year.
Speaking during the launch Steven Li, Head of Eastern Africa Mobile, “The market is growing and consumers spending habits are changing in terms of value for money. The introduction of the Y5 Lite in the market is therefore part of our strategy to target low end users who are looking for a budget device that offers unique experience that meets their needs and requirement.”
“The market has been competitive with the introduction of devices by other players in the market. As Huawei, we are keen on ensuring that our devices which we launch in the market are value for money making them more favorable in the already congested market. The launch of this device comes at a time when everyone is looking for a Christmas gift for their loved ones, it is an ideal gift for gifting people in your lives,” he concluded.
