One of HMD’s latest smartphones, the Nokia 5.1, is finally available in Kenya. The company has announced that this phone is available in the country for a recommended retail price of Ksh 19,500. The price may be lower if you happen to get it from platforms such as Jumia or Kilimall. Besides these, the phone should be on the shelves of most offline smartphone shops across the country.
The Nokia 5.1 is the latest Android One smartphone from HMD Global and with that brings the purest form of Android. Since it is an Android One smartphone, the Nokia 5.1 is guaranteed to get monthly security patches and two years of OS updates. This means that it should get Android Pie very soon and should also get Android Q when it is available next year. For those who have always wanted to have the latest Android versions, this phone is worth considering as it gets you that for the next two years.
Celeste Muli – Gatheru, Marketing Manager, East Africa, HMD Global, said:
“For many people their smartphone is the first thing they look at in the morning and the last thing they put down in the evening. No matter how much you want to spend on your smartphone, we believe that you deserve to have a reliable device that looks amazing and performs smoothly. The Nokia 5 has been one of our most popular phones at this price point in Kenya and we believe the refinements we’ve made to this winning formula will be welcomed by our fans.”
The Nokia 5.1 launches in Kenya less than a month after the company unveiled yet another smartphone, the Nokia 3.1. The Nokia 3.1 is slightly cheaper than the 5.1 and is also an Android One smartphone. It is interesting to see HMD being this active in Kenya as it tries to get a piece of the pie. It promises high quality hardware with a smooth software experience, something most other competing manufacturers cannot promise. Will this work out? Only time will tell.
