The Infinix Hot 6 Pro Vs Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

Infinix Hot 6 Pro vs Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 kenya

The Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 and Infinix Hot 6 Pro are the two smartphones you are probably looking at if your budget is between Ksh 15,000 and Ksh 20,000. These are the latest mid-range smartphones to be launched by the two companies in Kenya. They are direct competitors and have a lot of similarities with their main selling points being their 18:9 displays, fast Snapdragon processors and their cameras.

The Infinix Hot 6 Pro is available as from Ksh 15,000 for the 2GB model while the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 starts at Ksh 17,000. This is not a huge price difference and that is why comparing the two makes sense.

I have already reviewed the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 which you can check out using the link below.

Design

Both the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 and the Infinix Hot 6 Pro look and feel good. Both companies did a really good job in terms of the hardware used and the designs. The frame of the Y7 Prime 2018 is smooth all round while the one of the Hot 6 Pro is not, the bottom part is thicker while the top part with the screen is thinner. This is not bad but that is sort of the difference between the two.

The two phones are the same size with the Hot 6 Pro being a tiny bit taller. The Y7 prime is also flat and for me this makes it feel comfortable when holding it. The Hot 6 Pro has slightly curved edges that should comfortably fit in your hand.

So which one is the right one? Honestly I am conflicted, they are both different and perfect in their own way. It is all about personal preference, do you want the one with the flat back or the one with the slightly curved back? I am more for the Y7 Prime as it feels different from what I am used to.

Display

We spend a lot of time looking at the displays on our smartphones and for that reason, the display should be one reason why you choose one smartphone over another. The Y7 has a 5.99-inch display while the Hot 6 Pro has a 6-inch display. They are pretty much the same size with both having the same resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels.

Both these phones have 18:9 displays but the one on the Hot 6 Pro is vibrant and has better contrast. The one on the Y7 Prime has a slightly warmer feel to it. It is not as bright and when you compare it with the one on the Hot 6 Pro, you will notice that the whites are not as white as you’d expect them to. I have shown these two displays to different people and some people like the slightly warm feel of the Y7 Prime while other are attracted to the vibrancy of the Hot 6 Pro. I am part of the latter group, I like my displays bright.

With the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018, you can change the colour mode to your liking. Changing the colour mode involves changing the colour temperature and sort of add a tint to the display to be warm or cold. A warm temperature adds a brownish tint that may be perfect for those who don’t like bright displays. A cold display makes the display brighter by accentuating the whites.

As for which one is better, I would have to say the Hot 6 Pro is my choice, it is just ticks all the boxes for me.

Performance and Software

The Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 comes with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 processor (Octa-core) paired with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage space and the Adreno 505 GPU for handling graphics. The Infinix Hot 6 Pro on the other hand comes with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 425 processor (quad-core) paired with either 2 or 3GB of RAM, 16/ 32GB of storage space and Adreno 308 GPU. This is the first smartphones from Infinix powered by a Snapdragon processor to be launched in Kenya.

Both units have Android 8.0 Oreo preinstalled with EMUI 8.0 custom UI on the Y7 and XOS 3.2 on the Hot 6 Pro. The two custom UIs are different and the one you choose will be all about you. I rarely use these and ended up installing Nova launcher on both devices.

Both devices handle most tasks perfectly but you will notice some differences when you start multitasking or running demanding applications. When playing graphics intensive games, the two have no problem rendering the graphics but when I try to switch from the game to another application, I noticed the Hot 6 Pro screen freezes a bit before refreshing. This is not that serious but it is something you ought to know. If you rarely run heavy applications on your phone, you may not even notice this and this will not be an issue.

As for which phone performs better, I will have to go with the Y7 Prime 2018, it just has a smooth experience all round.

Cameras

Both the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 and Infinix Hot 6 Pro have two cameras at the back. These are the 13MP and 2MP cameras with the Y7 Prime having an 8MP selfie camera and the Hot 6 Pro having a 5MP selfie camera. The second camera on both these devices is to help with portrait mode, this is where you blur the background and keep the subject in focus, I will get to this in a bit.

If you want better contrast, the back camera of the Y7 Prime is the one for you. The photos you take are rich in colour and very sharp especially when outdoors. I preferred this over the less saturated photos I got with the Hot 6 Pro. Even with that said, I have to mention that the Y7 Prime tends to add too much contrast on some of the shots and they end up looking unrealistic.

As for portrait mode, the Infinix Hot 6 Pro wins. It works every single time unlike the one of the Y7 Prime that is unpredictable. This is strange as most of the other devices from Huawei have some of the best portrait shots I have seen on smartphones but this is not the case with the Y7.

For the selfie camera, the 5MP sensor on the Hot 6 Pro outshines the 8MP sensor on the Y7 Prime. This is interesting and I was surprised with the results I got. The selfies I got  with the Hot 6 Pro are way brighter when indoors and this is something you want when taking selfies. They are also sharp and detailed.

Both the selfies below were taken with no flash.

In Summary, I like the main camera photos I got with the Y7 Prime but I prefer the portrait mode and the selfie shots I got with the Hot 6 Pro.

Battery

The Infinix Hot 6 Pro comes with a 4000 mAh battery while the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 has a 3000mAh battery. With that said, the Hot 6 Pro is the clear winner, I got the battery to last the entire day most days with over 5 hours of screen on time. This is the phone you want if you are looking for a smartphone with a battery that will not disappoint. The battery on the Y7 Prime can still get you through the whole day but it does not match that of the Hot 6 Pro. One thing Huawei has always done is have different battery saving modes that you can activate to get the battery to last longer. I would love to see Infinix do the same to make the battery last longer.

Out of the two, I prefer the battery and battery life I got with the Infinix Hot 6 Pro. I do not have to worry about recharging the phone before the day ends and in some cases I got it to last for up to 2 days.

Conclusion

The Infinix Hot 6 Pro and the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 are my top two smartphones that you should be looking at if you want to get a device for less than Ksh 20,000. The devices are excellently built with the latest features and good cameras. These are not your typical smartphones within this price range and neither of the two will disappoint you. You can go through what I have discussed above to decide which one is the right hone for you.
