The latest public available version of Google’s mobile OS is Android 8.0 Oreo which was released to the public not so long ago. manufacturers are yet to push the update to their devices and so far only those who have it are those who own the most recent Nexus devices and the Pixel smartphones. Even with that said, most of the top smartphone manufacturers have promised that they will update their devices by the end of the year.

For Google, having the latest update on its Nexus and Pixel devices is definitely a plus. The company has promised to make then even better with another update that is coming in the coming weeks. The company announced this yesterday when it revealed details about the Pixel Visual Core, the system-on-chip (SoC) on the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. This SoC particularly helps with image processing according to Google.

When talking about this SoC yesterday, the cmpany also announced that it will soon start rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo update. This will specifically be the developer preview (MR1) that it says will start rolling out in the “coming weeks.” No specific date has been given so it may be anytime from next week all the way to the end of the year.

As usual, this update will roll out to the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones first before other manufacturers get it. If it gets here on time without big changes, some manufacturers may even opt to skip Android 8.0 update and just push put Android 8.1 to their users.
