Skype has just released version 8.0 of its app for Android. The updated app is available on the Google Play Store and brings some US changes and a few Snapchat-like features.
You can say that this is a completely redesigned app as it comes with new animations, colours and shapes that were not there in the old app. From the main screen, you get three tabs with the centre one having all your chats. The left one is a new one and Skype is calling it Highlights. This is where you can share all your activities during the day the same way you do on Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp Stories and Facebook Moments. The videos and photos that you share will be like highlights reel for your friends to see what you are up to.
The tab on the right is also a new one and is the Capture tab. From this tab, you can take pictures and send them to your contacts or add them to your Highlights reel. You can edit the photos you take by drawing on them or adding stickers just the way you would do when on Snapchat. It looks like Snapchat is inspiring most of these companies as we can see more of them implementing features the company introduced to the instant messaging world.
The design changes aside, Snapchat hasn’t played around with the core functionality of the app that much. Most of the things have been left intact except for the card UI that shows the floating card on screen. If you fancy the new UI changes, you better head to the Play Store and get this app.
The changes are currently available on Skype 8.0 which is available on Android only, the iOS app is yet to be updated, that will be happening in a couple of weeks. Those on Windows and Mac will be getting the changes in the coming months.
