Crossing the 1 billion download mark on the Google Play Store is an achievement for any company. Right now, most apps that have crossed this mark are either owned by Google or Facebook. These are the two internet giants that seem to be everywhere when it comes to the mobile app business.
The latest app that has joined the exclusive 1 billion club is Instagram. It has taken the app four years to cross this mark but it is finally there. If you don’t already know, Instagram is owned by Facebook and this makes the fourth app owned by the social media giant to cross the 1 billion mark. The others are Facebook’s main app, WhatsApp and Messenger.
Instagram is also the 19th app to cross this mark on the Play store, impressive indeed. Instagram has been growing rapidly the last couple of years as more and more people prefer it over sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The app is particularly appealing to millennials who like sharing photos and videos over plain text.
For Instagram and Facebook, the next step now is to adapt to changes and try to attract even more people and avoid losing to newcomers such as Snapchat. If you remember, Instagram launched Stories future a few weeks ago as sort of its answer to Snapchat. The company has to try and offer users everything it sees important if it wants to remain relevant in the future. This is the only way it can guarantee growth and hence attract advertisers and not be like Twitter.
In Kenya, Instagram is one of the most downloaded apps on the play store. It is currently number 8 and has been there for quite a while and there is nothing stopping it.
