The last time we saw a flagship Lumia smartphone was back when Nokia still owned the Lumia brand. That was back in April 2014, close to two years ago. Microsoft finally unveiled its first flagship Lumia branded smartphones, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, late last year and the phones are really impressive. These phones were available officially launched in Kenya about two weeks ago and I finally got my hands on the Lumia 950.

I got this phone about five days ago and I meant to write this unboxing post back then but I just didn’t get around to do that till now.

If you have used any Lumia smartphone in the recent past, you will be very familiar with the Lumia 950 packaging. The package is simple in design and everything is arranged neatly inside to give it a premium feel.

Opening the box, the first thing you see is the phone tucked up nicely. The phone isn’t outrageous in terms of the design but you quickly realize it is a premium device once you hold it in your hands. The Lumia 950 is available for Ksh 65,000 in Kenya and Microsoft had to ensure the design reflected this.
The phone is easy to hold thanks to its small size. Small here refers to the 5.2 inch display size which many people will manage with one hand. Its back matte plastic cover (removable) makes it comfortable to hold and less slippery on the hand. Some of the controls you get include the up and down volume keys, power button and a dedicated camera button. All these are located on the right hand side of the phone.
At the top you get the headphone jack with the USB Type-C port at the bottom. You get a number of sensors next to the earpiece. One sensor you can appreciate is the Iris scanner which allows you to unlock your phone just by using your eyes.
Microsoft Lumia 950 (back)
At the back you get the massive 20MP PureView camera with ZEISS optics and triple LED flash. At the back is also the speaker grille and two microphones that you can almost miss until you look closely. The back cover is removable giving you access to the MicroSD card slot, two Nano SIM card slots and allows you to change the battery if you want to do so.

The Lumia 950 is the first flagship Lumia smartphone in almost two years and it clearly does not disappoint. It has a 5.2 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. This phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 with Dual-core 1.82 GHz Cortex-A57 & quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 Chipset paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space expandable up to 200GB using a microSD card. The back camera is a 20MP one with a 5MP one in front.
