Microsoft East Africa officially launched the Lumia 550 smartphone in the country yesterday. The Lumia 550 is the first entry level Lumia smartphone to come with Windows 10 Mobile. This smartphone was launched back in October but was never officially available in Kenya until now. The retail price of the Lumia 550 is about Ksh. 14,000 which may be seen as a bit high by some people considering the different Android options we have on the market.
When launching the Lumia 550, Microsoft also took the opportunity to officially introduce The Lumia 950, 950 XL and 650 into the country. These are mid and high end devices compared to the Lumia 550 which has been introduced into the market to take over from the Lumia 535 which wasn’t as successful as its predecessors, the Lumia 520 and 530.
The Lumia 550 is the cheapest Windows 10 smartphone that supports 4G LTE and this is a good thing for the Kenyan market. This phone is still more expensive that the cheapest 4G Android smartphones you can find in Kenya but it is still a good thing to see Microsoft try to bring the 4G experience to the low end market segment.
Some of the features of the Lumia 550 are as follows:
