The Samsung Galaxy J1 is the company’s low end device and at the moment the most affordable of all its devices. Compared with other players on the market, the Galaxy J1 is not that cheap and here in Kenya it retails for Ksh 10,000 on average which is not that cheap and is slightly more expensive compared to devices offered by Infinix, Tecno and even the new player on the market, Snokor.

With the lack of an affordable device from Samsung, the company has been losing market share especially in developing countries such as Kenya and even its top executives have admitted that. But Samsung is not just giving up, at least for now, as the company is believed to be working on an even cheaper version of the Galaxy J1 to be called the Galaxy J1 Mini.

The Galaxy J1 Mini has not been announced officially but has been spotted in GFXbench, Spreadtrum databases and even on Zauba  (a website tracking India’s import and export). Being spotted in any of these places is a clear indication that the device is somewhere out there and may be unveiled anytime soon.

The GFXbench listing has revealed some specs the Galaxy J1 mini has. The listing reveals that it will have a 4.3 inch display but the Zauba listing on the other hand reveals that it will have a 4 inch display. At this point we have to lean with the Zauba listing since benchmarks sometimes get this wrong. This display will have a resolution 800×480 pixels.

Powering the Galaxy J1 is a 1.5GHz quad core Spreadtrum SC8830 processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space. As for the cameras, it will have a 5MP one at the back and a 0.3MP one in front. As you clearly see, these are not the best cameras but considering this is meant to be an ultra-low end smartphone, you cannot complain so much.

Pricing for the Galaxy J1 has not been revealed so far but the Zauba listing indicates that it will retail at $50 before taxes (Ksh 5,100). This is a very impressive price point that if it comes to Kenya, am sure Samsung will be able to sell it quite well.

I will keep you updated on this device and inform you when it officially launches in Kenya.
